Philips Cinema TV
A technological titan that'll
transform movie nights
'Tis a little known fact that when you watch your regular TV which delivers movies at a standard 16:9 ratio you're not seeing the entire film. Bits are left off. Hence the black on-screen bars. In contrast (excuse the pun) the screen at your local multiplex is different. It has a broader 21:9 ratio.
To overcome this travesty, Philips has launched an extra-wide LCD set that displays every portion of a movie, just as its director intended. UK tech mag What Video & Hi-Def TV says the set "is little short of breathtaking" when playing HD content and Philips is pretty happy with itself, too.
So much so that it has spent much moolah on making Carousel (right), a glitzy promo intended to ram home the importance of the TV's colossal 56" screen. Adland honchos have since awarded the Philips commercial the Film Grand Prix at this year's Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival, a somewhat prestigious shindig.
Now how well the TV deals with run-of-the-mill broadcasts is anyone's guess. You'll just have to fork out the £4,500 to find out
